On October 5, 1975, the president of the United States of America, Gerald Ford, survived an assassination attempt by a woman named Sara Jane Moore. The would-be assassin fired a revolver at President Ford from a distance of about twenty feet. The shot missed President Ford and instead struck a man named Larry Buendorf, who was standing nearby. Secret Service agents quickly subdued Moore and took her into custody.
October 5th is a day of remembrance for many throughout the world. It is a day to commemorate the lives lost during the Holocaust, the genocide that resulted in the deaths of six million Jews. It is also a day to reflect on the importance of fighting bigotry and intolerance in all its forms. The Holocaust was one of the darkest periods in human history, and it is important that we never forget what happened.
The 5th October is an annual public holiday in Portugal, also known as the Dia da Restauração da Independência or The Day of the Restoration of Independence. It commemorates the country’s independence from Spanish rule in 1640. Portugal had been under Spanish rule since 1580, when King Philip II of Spain inherited the Portuguese throne. Philip’s reign was marked by economic and social decline, and he was unpopular with the Portuguese people.
